Drosera grievei

Range: East of lake Grace to east of Ravensthorp

A relatively widespread pygmy sundew in the more southeastern region of southwest Australia, this species grows in open shrublands in sandy laterite clay soils. Plants may reach up to 2 cm in diameter and sometimes forming stems up to 3 cm tall, with rosettes of generally flat to just semi-erect paddle-shaped leaves. Petioles are relatively slender and widest near but not at their base and taper to the lamina, often sporting a double keel on the upper surface and sporting small glands along the edges. Lamina are nearly rounded to slightly elliptic, slightly depressed in the middle and edged in long snap tentacles. Coloration is generally green with brilliant crimson lamina. Inflorescences are up to 3.5 cm tall with a moderately glandular base and sparse to glabrous rachis bearing up to 10 flowers. Each bloom is up to 1 cm across, with very distinctive broad overlapping obovate sepals and oblong to obovate, pure white petals with a grayish midvein. They may also occasionally sport pink ovaries. This species can be distinguished from all other species by its unusually large sepals.

Cultivation: grow in a 3:1 sand/peat mix in a deep pot, kept very moist and humid in winter, with temps of 50-70°F. In summer allow photoperiod to increase and temperatures to warm, but avoid drying out otherwise the dormant stipule buds can be difficult to reawaken. Sow seeds and gemmae on soil surface (seeds may require hot stratification or other treatments to germinate) and grow in strong artificial light to full sun.

Lifespan and reproduction: perennial. Reproduces through gemmae and, rarely, seed. May possibly be grown through leaf pullings.
