Drosera lasiantha

Range: southwest Australia, near Albany and Denmark

Found in the Porungorup Mountains and Mt. Lindesay (the latter of which where they grow stunted by alpine conditions), this stem-forming pygmy species grows in relatively high elevation open slopes in laterite-loam soils that can become extremely dry in summer. Plants may grow in clusters and reach 1.5 cm across, and often over 4 cm high as dead leaves stack on top of each other. Leaf petioles are roughly linear in shape but narrowing toward lamina, glabrous on top but densely covered in small glands on the undersurface, and lamina are elliptic, often slightly curved or indented. Coloration is green throughout with a yellow tinge in the lamina, and tentacles deep red creating a bicolor aappearance. Inflorescences are up to 4 cm high, covered in long white hairs and red glands, and bear up to 12 blooms, each flower often exceeding 1.2 cm in diameter with obovate, bright pink-purple petals. This species can be distinguished from similar stem-forming species by overall size and the woolly nature of their flower stalks.

Cultivation: grow in a 3:1 fine sand/peat mix in a deep pot, optionally covered in coarse gravel (but only a small layer). In winter, keep plants very moist and humid, with 40-70°F temps. During summer plants will go dormant if allowed to dry, but can be avoided by maintaining moisture; photoperiod and temperatures should increase to mirror seasons however in order to trigger gemmae and flowers next winter. Sow seeds and gemmae on soil surface (seeds may require heat stratification or other treatment to germinate) and grow in strong artificial light to full sun.

Lifespan and reproduction: perennial. Reproduces through gemmae and, rarely, seed, and may possibly be grown through leaf cuttings.
