A South-African "ice plant," this one is different from the more commonly grown Delosperma genus though displays many of the same characteristics that make that group so popular. Hardy to around zone 7 (grow indoors or in a pot elsewhere), this strange succulent grows as rigid pairs of sharp-tipped, fleshy leaves that split apart to reveal the next set of leaves within the base, eventually forming a short stem (and upon making new growth points, a dense mound) of rich green leaves that only grow a couple inches high, preferring to spread across the ground. Short stalks arise between the leaves producing singular aster-style blooms of brilliant lemon yellow, sometimes with red highlights on the external sepals. Best grown in sandy well-draining soils that remain just-moist or occasionally dry out.
Available plants are approx. 1-2 inches tall and wide (colony selected from shown in image).
