Most commonly called Seaside or Marsh Gentian (and one form also by Texas Bluebells) due to its most common habitat being in moist coastal regions, this particular variant is rather different: it's a desert dweller! The gypsum sands within New Mexico's Tularosa Basin, especially around the White Sands dunes, allow for very well-drained but water-retentive soils and let these plants thrive especially in wet years. Seeds can be somewhat touchy to germinate (try warm surface-sowing, but if nothing happens after a couple months offer a winter stratification), but if you succeed these annual to biennial plants can grow up to 18 inches tall, and are topped with spectacular 2.5 inch diameter cup-like blooms with lavender petals sporting white and darker purple rings near their center.
Extremely limited, packets contain approx. 50+ seeds each.
