The Giant Fishhook Barrel Cactus is an icon of the desert southwest, not as common or as immediately noticeable as things like prickly pears or the giant columnar cacti, but it's a showstopper when mature. Plants can reach over 4 feet tall and often over 2 feet across (earning the "barrel" name), with large curving and sometimes red-tipped spines on deep green ribbed stems. The real show comes when the bloom however, the crown becoming ringed with dozens of sequentially opening brilliant orange flowers that age into bright yellow fruits...which are edible, though don't have much flavor to them. Once established they need very little attention, though seedlings take many years to reach significant sizes. Packets contain approx. 25 seeds each (and have already been test-germinated with high viability).
