Coral Bells are a popular shade-toleraant garden plant, many species of which are found throughout the US. This is a selection from the lush canyons of the Santa Rita Mountains in southeastern Arizona, and a species that fully earns the common name. Mounded foot-wide clusters of ruffled, not-quite-round leaves covered in fuzz are held up on petioles equally fuzzy, and depending on lighting may range from pure green to red-blushed, the color strongest on the underside but also becoming extremely vibrant in fall before they die back (in colder regions; in warmer they are evergreen). Adult plants will throw up one to several stalks that are each loaded with dozens of tiny but brilliantly pink to crimson flowers with yellow inner parts, and may have a sweet smell to them. Best grown in a humus-rich but well-draining soil, and should be cold-tolerant to at least zone 4.
Available plants are young seedlings between 2-5 inches in diameter. Price is per plant.
