Often referred to as "Japanese Roof Iris" or "Wall Iris," this Asiatic species produces fans of strap shaped leaves up to around 15 inches tall, slowly branching through rhizomes as they mature and spread. In spring, stalks shoot up a few inches higher than the leaves and put on a show with massive up to 6 inch wide spreading blooms with narrow-based tepals colored lavender with spots of darker purple. It's part of the "crested Iris" group, so named for the little fringed crests running just in front of the reproductive portions of the flower. Seeds generally require a 2-3 month cold stratification, then sown on the moist but moderately drained soil that adults prefer.
