Hailing from northern South America, this is one of the easier to grow epiphytic species and does well in a Nepenthes-like mix kept on the drier side. These moderate to high elevation plants can tolerate fairly warm conditions or be grown as highlanders, and form spreading clumps of rhizomes from which 8 inch tall leaves sprout, with thick cylinder petioles and a spreading lanceolate lamina above. When happy, tiny buds form from the crease in the base of the leaf lamina above the petiole that eventually develop into 1/2-1 inch long flowers with a pair of slender spade-shaped yellow calyx lobes, a similar shaped but slightly smaller lower petal flushed or striated in red, and two filamentous upper petals that stretch upward or to the sides. Plants occasionally develop roots from the same spot after flowers are spent, that give rise to detachable plantlets.
Available plants are young rooted plantlets with new leaves growing approx. 1 inch long.
