The Staghorn Sumac is a gorgeous North American native plant that develops loose shrublike growth with several main trunks and branches covered in rusty fuzzy hairs, reaching up to 12-15 feet tall on maturity and tipped in multi-part, serrated lance-shaped leaves that are a rich green through spring and summer, before turning blazing red in fall. Mature plants will also produce spikes of unassuming, fuzzy looking white flowers that give way to also very fuzzy (sense a theme?) tiny drupe fruits. The outer coating is exceedingly sour, and can be removed and steeped to make a lemonade substitute, or ground as a tangy seasoning. Very cold-hardy and likes growing in areas of moderate moisture and partial shade to full sun.
Available plants are seedlings approx. 4 inches tall.
